Big things happening for me in 2012! I knew that this year would bring changes for me in my career, and its happening as I write this! After I graduated college I knew that I would never go work for a large company. Large companies is not where my heart nor passion lies. My passion thrives in small business and supporting local businesses that I love. My passion also lies in all things food, wine, beer and photography. So what is my big announcement? Well here it is:
I AM BUYING A BUSINESS! Yup- buying a business where I can put all my passions together! I am purchasing the Urban Decanter in Forest Grove, Oregon. The Urban Decanter is a wine bar and wine shop that has so much potential! When I caught word that it was for sale at a price I could afford, I jumped on the opportunity. Currently the business sells wine, beer and food. The space needs little to no maintenance.
So what will I bring to the table with a business that is currently running and operating? The answer is LOTS! I have a whirlwind of ideas in my head that I am trying to sort through on paper. I am going to add locally distilled spirits, work with local food producers on menu items, have classes that will be taught by local chefs and industry folks, and get my favorite products into the shop. I want to create a place where people can find the best products that the NW has to offer. I want to support local businesses and small businesses.
This exciting, life changing opportunity that I am diving into has been very hard to keep quiet. I am excited to share this with everyone. Its going to take time to incorporate my ideas and I have outlined steps that I am going to take through in the first year. My first goal is to focus on how to run the business efficiently and effectively. I also need to connect with the community since I am going to be a local business owner.
I must give a HUGE THANK YOU to a few people:
My parents for supporting me through this transition in my life. They have great insight and advice to running small businesses. I like to say that its my parents fault that I am a little entrepreneur and I wouldn't have it any other way! My parents have shown me how to follow your passion and support me in all I do.
My sister Kim- She also has given me great advice and support through this process. I go to her for advice all the time and she gives a great perspective on everything I ask. She is going to be a wonderful resource as I learn the ins and outs of the business and will be helpful with wine knowledge!
Big Mike! I am thankful to have been connected to him as he is an amazing chef with great ideas that will be an invaluable mentor for me. When I began this endeavour I knew he was the chef I wanted to work with. His knowledge and experience is going to help me add some tasty menu items to the Urban Decanter!
Beau- I have to thank my wonderful boyfriend for his love and support. I constantly inquire with him about his opinion and advice. He has never once has doubted my dream of doing something like this, he is there by my side as I do this and will continue to do so as time goes on.
Lastly- Thank you to everyone else who has shown their support, thoughts, ideas, opinions and excitement! I hope that I can reciprocate the same thing for all of you at some point in my life =) I just cannot say thank you enough!
